Olumo Rock…a living Museum with mystery Caves and Hanging Gardens!


Olumo Rock with its caves and intimidating boulders was a place of refuge for the Egba people of South Western Nigeria, in times of war. Today it is their symbol of unity and divine favor.
Olumo Rock has become the cultural and historical star of the major outcropping of igneous rocks which have dominated the landscape of the famous town of Abeokuta, located on the eastern flank of the renowned Ogun River. The general range of igneous rock outcropping stands at an altitude of 183meters (600ft) from surrounding ground level to the peak. Olumo Rock stands at about 137meters (449ft). Igneous rocks are formed from magma, the liquid material that forms the core of planet earth and solidifies on extrusion or eruption to the earth’s surface. Olumo Rock is essentially of the granite family and practically speaking, ageless.

The major infrastructural development at Olumo Rock has greatly enhanced the tourism face of Olumo Rock. These developments include:
Installation of three panoramic lifts which embrace the rock and offer an optional access point to the peak of the rock.

Accommodation for an eatery, arts and craft shop.

Administrative rooms, museum and a multipurpose hall for conferences, receptions, exhibitions and a designated space for a special museum collection.

Also provided are ample parking spaces, a power house and toilet facilities.

Space is available for parties, receptions and get together.

Scenic backdrops available for video and film shooting.

Visits Statistics

Over 142, 900 visitors consisting of adults and children have visited Olumo Rock Tourist Complex as paying tourists between March 2006 and June 2007[16 months]. Visitors consist of adult and children from Nigeria, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. More visitors are still trooping in to discover the new look Olumo Rock.

Some Remarkable Landmarks

Five remarkable landmarks of interest to the tourist on Olumo Rock include:

The Ancient Route: this is a huge crevice in the rock that must be scaled to get to the peak of the rock by those who do not use the lift or lift stairways.

The Ancient Natural Caves: formed within the natural, incredible, cantilever of the rock, is a giant cave. Within the giant cave are smaller caves which provide shelter for as many as can find their way in.

The Crown Tree: there is an Iroko tree, over two centuries old, which visibly grows out of the rock and produces leaves all the year round. It is also known as Crown Tree because it forms a living stem or plume on the crown of Olumo Rock.

The Medicinal Water of the Rock: flows from the top near the crown tree right through the rock to the second base where it seeps out from the rock below the crown tree base level. It is said to have powers to cure many skin ailment when applied.
